Organize Your Goals and Priorities Do First Things First by Barb Friedman Are you doing the most important things in your life first? Do you know what the most important things are? Once you have established your goals, you must understand how to put them into action. This involves prioritizing each task that must be done in order to achieve the goal. To begin, take a sheet of paper (or a blank word document) and list all of the small, individual items that need to be completed before your goal can be accomplished. Use your list as a guideline for breaking the project into small, measurable, attainable tasks that you can focus on for 30-45 minutes at a time. The list should then be put into the correct order according to which tasks must be completed first, second, third and so on. This is called: putting first things first. For every project or goal, there will be certain items that must be done before other items can even be considered. You must have a thorough working knowledge of the goal and the time frame required. Once you have determined the order for each task, the next step is to schedule them in your calendar/planner. Work backwords from the deadline date and plot out how many times each week you will have to schedule time in order to complete the goal. (This is also called ‘backtiming’) If you need 3 times a week for several weeks, decide which days and times you are going to commit to working on a task. Schedule it into your calendar as an appointment. It is critical to honor your commitment. If a work issue occurs that requires you to ‘cancel’ the time set aside for the scheduled task, you must re-schedule it as soon as possible. By sticking to the schedule, you will have allotted for enough time to complete the project. Another way to look at doing first things first is to choose a task that is particularly unpleasant to you and resolve to do it first thing in the day and get it over with. It relieves a lot of stress, anxiety and worry. Just thinking about a difficult situation uses up a lot of energy during the day. It is much better to deal with it and get it over with. Trust me, it works! Now that you understand the importance of prioritizing your tasks, try it with your daily schedule as well as for larger projects and goals. The ability to take planned action will increase your productivity and help you achieve your dreams.
