Dr. Phil Is Calling!
by Barb Friedman

'Hello, this is Rosanna from the Dr. Phil Show. Is this Barb Friedman of Organize IT?'

And so the conversation begins and leads to an assignment and appearance with Dr. Phil. The television show teaser was 'If you think you are married to the worst spouse in America, please write in and tell us why'. A couple from Wisconsin wrote in to explain that the disorganization in their family life was causing a lot of problems. They were chosen by the show to be highlighted in an upcoming segment.

The family had a stay at home mom who also took in other children 3 days a week for day care and to bring in extra income. Dad worked full time and went to school in the evenings to complete a degree. Three children, ages 5, 3, and 9 months completed the picture. They clearly had their hands full! Add to that the fact that they really didn’t have the knowledge or skills to get organized. By the time Organize IT was on the job, the entire house needed to be organized and a lot of skills had to be taught.

The family took to the process like a duck to water. They thrived with each new accomplishment and learned to overcome obstacles and challenges along the way. The first part of the puzzle was teaching them where their time was going all day and how to make better use of it by using an appropriate calendar system.

Once they understood how to use their time, they were able to schedule in time to work on getting organized: laundry, grocery shopping, doing dishes, playing with the kids, study time for dad, mom’s time for herself. It is an evolving process with changes along the way. That is to be expected because life continues to change for all of us.

Next we determined activity stations throughout the house so that all 'like' things were together. Examples of stations are: photos and albums, linens, toys, extra paper and school supplies, out of season clothes, files and bills, stationery and stamps. The list goes on and on. The process begins with sorting like items so that they could see what they had. It is usually a shock to see how much we accumulate that we don’t even know we have. 7 bottles of glue! Or 12 rolls of scotch tape! Or 15 bottles of shampoo! When like items are put together, it is possible to see the whole picture. It is also easier to determine where to store each grouping after you see how much inventory you have in a certain category.

Organizing is a process. It takes shape over a period of time. Habits also need to change and that can take several weeks or more. Only change one or two habits at a time, otherwise it is too overwhelming. When you start to feel comfortable and see a sense of accomplishment, you can move on to the next step.

The family and I developed a wonderful relationship and still keep in touch to help maintain their systems. What did they gain? Reduced stress, less anxiety, a sense of peace of mind, and freedom. They no longer felt tied to their disorganization and were able to live the life they deserved!!
