Organize Your Space Find Hidden Space in Small Storage Areas by Barb Friedman A constant complaint that I often hear is ‘I don’t have enough storage space.' Recently, that seems to be a universal mantra. In fact, the self storage business has increased 9% over the past year. For many businesses, certain files and information must be kept as long as the owner is doing business, regardless of how many years that may span. The demand for more storage space will continue to grow because we retain information much longer. The solution has been in front of us all along - go vertical. Shelving options can accommodate additional storage to the top of the space. Although the top shelves may be hard to reach, the oldest information or the least used information would have its place there. When planning shelves, remember to measure the height between each shelf so that it can hold the type of storage container you are using. Also factor in the depth that you need. If it is a small space, the shelves may be narrow, but still functional. If they are too narrow for storage containers, perhaps they will hold smaller items or supplies. There are a variety of ways to add shelves to your space. Free standing plastic or metal shelving is one option. Built in shelves can be customized for your unique space. Make sure that the type of shelving you use can hold the weight of the items you are storing. Take a look at the room, closet or storage area you are working in. Don’t overlook corners as good use of space. It seems as though the more storage space we have, the more we fill it up. Everyone suffers from the lack of space in certain areas. The challenge is to take a step back and look at the space with a fresh perspective. Be realistic about how much you are trying to store in a specific space. Make sure that the items you are storing need to be saved. A huge space waster is saving things that have no real value or will not be needed again. Be creative when determining your system. Consider what types of items you need storage for, the size you need room for, and how often you need to be able to access it. © 2005 - Barb Friedman - Organize IT Get organizing tips, ideas articles and more at the Organized IT web site. http://www.organizeitbiz.com Editors and publishers may reprint this article as long as it's reprinted in its entirety and the signature line remains intact.
